The Journey to the Motherland (Africa)
My goodness have the last 36 hours been interesting! So Sunday November 3rd began our journey to Africa...
here's what should've happened...
flight at 12:15pm from Dallas to Atlanta
flight at 5:35pm from Atlanta to Amsterdam
Arrive in Amsterdam around 9AM and catch a plane to Kilamanjaro at 10:15AM to begin our adventures.
But here's what actually happened:
our flight from Dallas to Atlanta was great. We got in Atlanta had lunch and some adult beverages with some friends and then headed to our gate. Well, as we're about to take off we smell something thats similar to how it smells when a diesel truck gets in front of you and you accidentally have the air circulating from outside instead of inside the car... it was awful, everyone could smell it and something just didn't seem right. But, they kept us in the air for a little over an hour before the pilot came on the intercom to tell us that we're going back to Atlanta because ONE OF THE OVENS HAD BURNED OUT. Yes, you read that correctly, one of the ovens where they store our food had burnt out when we took off. Well when he tells us we're preparing for landing, he says that emergency landing crew will be helping us to make sure our brakes don't over heat and give out... Good job comforting us Delta, thanks. So we sit at the airport for another two hours trying to fix everything and letting people off the plane because they weren't going to make their connecting flights and calling our travel agency to get help, etc etc. we finally take off and make it to Amsterdam and naturally, missed our flight...
So, we've been here for a day now. Our next airline, KLM, was so wonderful to get us on a flight in the morning AND complimentary hotel stay with food coupons. That's hospitality done right! BUT there's a catch: we can't take our luggage out of the airport so even if we do shower, we're still in the same clothes for another 24 hours 😩 damn!
But, oh well, despite the rainy cold weather we went out in Amsterdam to walk around for a few hours. Had I been dressed properly I probably would've enjoyed it a lot more but wow, this is a beautiful city! We walked probably about a mile or two around the Red Light district and surrounding areas.. Definitely and interesting experience lol we're definitely not in America anymore!
But we're about to have dinner and pass out because we have to be up for our flight in the morning! Woo! It's been a long 30 or so hours for this little lady.
I shall write more when the real adventure begins!! ✌️
